PEDAGOGICAL APPROACH
Preliminary notes provided to the University of Limerick
Language Centre by Colonias de Inmersión al Idioma.
The aim of the course is to provide the students with practical
skills which will help them use the English language in real-life
situations. The course is conceived as a complement to the
studies of the language done by the students prior to their
trip to Ireland. Thus the curricula is tailor-made to match
the profile of the specific students. The classroom functions
as a language lab and the skills studied and reviewed there
are later extended and consolidated through additional field-work
performed by the students in their exploration of the real
world. Each class a topic is introduced and discussed. Students
review the grammar involved and plan the strategy required
to perform the corresponding assignment after the lesson.
Next class, the debriefing process takes place and the students
report on their assignment, covering the various aspects of
it: vocabulary, grammar and effectiveness of the strategy/strategies
used. Thus the students gain confidence in exploring the real
world through this approach which covers stages which naturally
blend into one another: planning-performance-debriefing.
